Your Power, Our People, the Worlds Defense, In More Ways Than One: A Look at Reporting Fake Profiles

Creating fake profiles to scam people for money is a violation of Facebook’s Community Standards. While the firm says it has invested in technology and human content moderators to ensure that people use their real identities on their platforms, ACCO experts Bryan Denny and Kathy Waters have found otherwise.

In this investigative report, Waters and Denny focused on revealing fake profiles of Bryan Denny on Facebook and found issues with the tech platform’s procedures, policies and platform security. Denny and Waters would present this report to Facebook’s Safety and Security Team, but months later, Denny would still find romance scammers using his images.

The New York Times estimates that the number of fake profiles has steadily risen to about 120 million accounts across the Facebook family of platforms. To help bring down fake profiles on Facebook, there is a need for better investigating, research and knowledge.
